West Fork Des Moines River at Estherville affecting Emmet County. .The river forecasts are conditional and dependent on the forecast rainfall across the river basins through Sunday morning. * WHAT...Moderate flooding is forecast. * WHERE...The West Fork Des Moines River at Emmetsburg, or from near Graettinger to Cylinder Creek near West Bend. * WHEN...From this evening until further notice. * IMPACTS...At 11.0 feet, Water threatens Iowa 4 in areas near the river overpass as well as the road to the rendering plant. The road to the sanitary landfill area is closed. At 14.0 feet, Sandbagging operations occur for businesses along US 18 on the west side of town in and near the flood plain. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 8:15 PM CDT Friday the stage was 10.8 feet. - Forecast...The river is expected to rise above flood stage late this evening and continue rising to a crest of 14.1 feet Monday evening. - Flood stage is 11.0 feet. Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. Flood Watch issued June 21 at 6:49PM CDT until June 22 at 1:00PM CDT by NWS Des Moines IA A moderate risk of heavy rainfall and flash flooding is forecast over northern Iowa through the overnight. Storms will be increasing in coverage this evening, with the heaviest rainfall expected later this evening to early Saturday morning. Some uncertainty remains as to the exact axis of heaviest rainfall, but current indications are that the heaviest rainfall in north central Iowa will be generally between Highway 20 and the Iowa Minnesota border. If you live in or near the watch, please monitor the weather closely this evening and tonight. Review flooding safety plans now and be prepared if you must take action. * WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible. * WHERE...Portions of north central and northwest Iowa, including the following counties, in north central Iowa, Cerro Gordo, Hancock, Kossuth, Winnebago and Worth. In northwest Iowa, Emmet and Palo Alto. * WHEN...Through Saturday afternoon. * IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded. Extensive street flooding and flooding of creeks and rivers are possible. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Expected rainfall totals may exceed 4 to 7 inches in some areas with locally higher amounts are possible. Rapid rises in creeks, streams and urban flooding will be possible. Field flooding and washed out county roads will also be possible. Rainfall rates may approach 2 inches per hour in the heavier storms. Nighttime flooding is especially dangerous due to the lack of light and ability to see flooding impacts.
