West Fork Des Moines River at Estherville affecting Emmet County. * WHAT...Major flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast. * WHERE...The West Fork Des Moines River at Estherville, or from the Iowa-Minnesota border to near Wallingford. * WHEN...Until further notice. * IMPACTS...At 15.0 feet, Several evacuations and road closures may occur. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 10:00 AM CDT Saturday the stage was 16.0 feet. - Forecast...The river is expected to rise to a crest of 16.1 feet this afternoon. It will then rise to 16.8 feet early Tuesday morning. Additional rises are possible thereafter. - Flood stage is 10.0 feet. - Flood History...This crest compares to a previous crest of 17.7 feet on 04/12/1969. This crest would be the second highest crest on record and would surpass the crest set in 1993. Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Numerous roads remain closed due to flooding. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 1052 AM CDT, emergency management reported heavy rain in the warned area due to thunderstorms. Flooding is occurring. Between 3 and 6 inches of rain fell. - Some locations that will experience flooding include... Estherville, Emmetsburg, Five Island Lake, High Lake, Ingham Lake, Swan Lake, Lost Island Lake, Silver Lake, Okamanpedan Lake, Rush Lake, Iowa Lake, Armstrong, Graettinger, West Bend, Ruthven, Ringsted, Mallard, Wallingford, Ayrshire and Gruver. In northwest Iowa, Emmet and Palo Alto. * WHEN...Until 7 PM CDT this evening. * IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded. Extensive street flooding and flooding of creeks and rivers are possible. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Showers and thunderstorms developing this afternoon and evening may bring additional rainfall of 1 to 2" or more to areas that saw heavy rainfall last night. This may delay improvement to any ongoing flood conditions and lead to brief flooding or ponding of water as storms pass through.
