Special Weather Statement issued July 20 at 3:30PM EDT by NWS Raleigh NC At 330 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Creedmoor to near Chapel Hill. Movement was east at 15 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 50 mph and penny size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include... Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill, Creedmoor, Wake Forest, Carrboro, Butner, Franklinton, and RDU International. This includes the following highways... Interstate 85 between Mile Markers 170 and 191. Interstate 40 between Mile Markers 267 and 290. Interstate 440 between Mile Markers 3 and 14. Interstate 540 between Mile Markers 0 and 24. the Durham Freeway between Mile Markers 2 and 17. If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
