Heat Advisory issued June 12 at 10:09AM EDT until June 12 at 8:00PM EDT by NWS Blacksburg VA * WHAT...Heat index values up to 105 possible. * WHERE...In North Carolina, Caswell, Rockingham, and Stokes Counties. In Virginia, Appomattox, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Halifax, Henry, and Pittsylvania Counties. * WHEN...Until 8 PM EDT this evening. * IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

Special Weather Statement issued June 12 at 7:47PM EDT by NWS Blacksburg VA At 747 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over Martinsville, moving east at 25 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Locations impacted include... Martinsville... Axton... Leatherwood... Swansonville... Villa Heights... Chatmoss... and Collinsville. If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Locally heavy rain will quickly reduce visibility and result in ponding of water on roadways, standing water in low lying areas, and minor flooding of creeks, streams, and areas of poor drainage. Drivers are urged to slow down and use extra caution to avoid hydroplaning. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 1100 PM EDT for south central, central, southwestern and west central Virginia.
